What is Korean Culture Night?

Korean Culture Night (KCN) is an annual stage production that is hosted by Hanoolim, a Korean cultural awareness student group at the University of California, Los Angeles. For over twenty years, this event has educated UCLA students and the Los Angeles community about Korean and Korean-American culture through various forms of the performing arts. Our goal is to raise cultural awareness, promote multi-culturalism, and provide an event where students and the local community can converge and celebrate the achievements of Koreans and Korean-Americans.

The three-hour show features a live play integrated with traditional drumming, traditional dance, modern dance and original music – all tied together by a common theme specifically chosen for that year. The theme ranges from historical issues and traditional values to current topics and interests pertaining to Korean-Americans. Having a particular theme allows us to address and portray different aspects of Korean culture, which helps broaden our perspective in understanding who we are, where we have come from, and where we are going.

Preparation for KCN

Throughout the school year, over eighty students participate in the production of KCN by creating entirely original works in script-writing, set and graphic design, dance choreography, etc. The grand performance takes place in spring with over 1,800 attendees at the prestigious UCLA Royce Hall. KCN remains the single largest student project at UCLA that brings together a diverse group of talented Korean students to collaborate and combine their skills into one cohesive, original play. Furthermore, KCN has become a highly regarded and well-received student production in the nation.
